Five women were killed and at least 10 others injured in a stampede at the New Delhi railway station on Saturday.

Two of the dead have been identified as Kanta Devi and Laxmi, railway sources said.

The stampede occurred on platform no 3 at around 2 pm when a large crowd rushed to catch the Patna-bound Jan Sadharan Express to be home for the Chhath Puja and Eid, the sources said.

Two women slipped on the stairs leading to the platform and many others fell on them.

The injured were shifted to a nearby railway hospital, where five of them succumbed, the sources said.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has sanctioned ex-gratia relief of Rs 100,000 each to the next of the kin of those killed, Northern Railway General Manager R R Jaruhar said.
