A US Air Force giant mid-air refueller with 10 people on board, including crew members, on Friday made an emergency landing at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after it reported some technical fault.
Earlier, police and airport sources had said there were 111 US service personnel on board the KC-10 tanker which was returning to the Anderson air base in Guam island in the Pacific after escorting five F-15C US Air Force fighters
for a joint exercises with the Indian Air Force at Gwalior.
The aircraft, after its return from Gwalior, had a night halt in the capital and took off for its Pacific Command home base at 1410 hours when the crew noticed the emergency engine fire alarm and returned to Delhi.
Full emergency was declared at the airport with fire tenders rushing to the tarmac to meet any eventuality, airport sources said.
A US embassy spokesman said: "The technical fault was rectified when the aircraft was in the air itself and the refueller landed safely at IGI airport at 1423 hours."
All the people on board were safely evacuated and the emergency was called off at 1449 hours.
