6 bomb-like objects found at
New Delhi railway station

Detection of six bomb-like objects at the bustling New Delhi railway station on Friday triggered panic but on examination these turned out to be 'crude crackers'.

However, police has taken cognizance of the attempt to create 'mischief' and have launched an investigation to track down the person who placed the plastic bag containing the objects at the auto stand in the station, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways) U K Katna told PTI on Friday night.

Immediately after the objects were recovered, a Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was called, which concluded that they were 'crude crackers'.

The detection came as a sequel to Delhi Police taking steps to create awareness among people following a bomb blast in a train in Mumbai on Thursday night, Katna said.

Several people are being questioned but no one has been detained so far, he said.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) R S Gumman had announced that six bombs had been detected at around 1530 IST in the premises of the New Delhi railway station and were defused without causing any damage.

They were found in an unattended bag, which was detected by a passer-by Girdi Ram.

Ram immediately alerted the police, Gumman said adding he had been awarded Rs 500 for showing alertness. He may be given more awards, he said.

Delhi is on a higher state of alert since Thursday's blast in a local train in Mumbai.

Particular attention is being given to security of vital installations and at crowded places in the national capital, where a terrorist threat looms large.

In recent warnings, intelligence agencies had suggested that terrorists could strike at India Gate, forcing sealing of the famous tourist spot.

Katna said Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) and sniffer dogs had been deployed at all the five major railway stations in the national capital as part of measures to foil any evil designs of terrorists.
