In the second incident of drunk driving in national capital New Delhi this week, a driver who was allegedly in an inebriated state ran his sports utility vehicle over three people standing near a footpath in Central Delhi, killing one of them.
Police said the incident took place near Shanti Van around 11.15 pm on Wednesday night when the driver, identified as Satyaprakash and a resident of Rohini area, lost control over the vehicle.
Satyaprakash has been arrested and some beer cans have also been recovered from his SUV.
"Satyaprakash, who was in inebriated state, along with his employer's son was going somewhere. When they reached near Shanti Van, he lost control over the vehicle after its tyre burst, hitting the divider and ramming over three rickshaw pullers, who along with their vehicles were standing near a footpath," Additional CP (central) Alok Kumar said.
After the incident, all the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Munna was declared dead while two others were recuperating.
"We have arrested Satyaprakash and booked him under appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is on," Kumar said.
The condition of one of the injured, Jaan Bahudhur is said to be critical.
On the night of August 17, one person was killed and 12 were injured when a 30-year-old inebriated man ran his SUV over them while they were sleeping on a road divider in Kashmere Gate area in North Delhi.
