Delhi Ganesh immersion: Toll in drowning goes up to 17

Nine more bodies were recovered from the Yamuna river on Thursday, taking the death toll to 17, during the immersion of statutes of Lord Ganesha on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Yogesh Kumar, 20, Rajesh, 25, Rahul, 31, Toshi, 25, Kale, 31, Sunny, 22, Bhogat, 20, and Bhagat, 45. Efforts are on to identify the remaining bodies, said police.

The bodies have been recovered from Kudeshia Ghat near Kashmere Gate, Wazirabad, Burari and Sonia Vihar area on Wednesday and Thursday, said police.

The deaths occurred in separate incidents.

A large number of devotees had gathered on Wednesday at various places in Wazirabad to complete the rituals of immersion of Ganesha.

Rescue operations are on till late to night, said police.
