In one of the biggest hauls, Delhi Police seized 99 pistols and 198 magazines meant for various criminal gangs operating in and around the national capital, police said on Wednesday.

Niranjan Mishra and Mohd Firoz Alam were arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police from ShastriPark area Tuesday evening along with the cache of weapons concealed in their car, police said.

"Secret information was received that a huge consignment of illegal weapons shall be supplied in an Ambassador car. Accordingly, a trap was laid and a cream colour car was intercepted with Mishra and Alam in it.

"They initially tried to dodge the police team but could not succeed. Later, they revealed that weapons were hidden in a cavity created under the headlights of the car," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) MM Oberoi.

Oberoi said the weapons were made in Bihar's Munger district, which is infamous for illegal arms. The two arrested persons also hail from the same district.

"The consignment was meant to be delivered in Meerut and Delhi. Due to heavy rains, they failed to reach Meerut in time and the consignment could not be delivered. After that, they came to Delhi to deliver the other consignment at Sonia Vihar, but were nabbed," said Oberoi.

During initial interrogation, the duo allegedly told the police that they had supplied a consignment of 80-85 pistols to one Haaji alias Mullaji in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh in the last week of May.

Efforts are on to nab Haaji and reach the source of the seized weapons as the "arrested duo were just couriers", they said.

Earlier, investigators had recovered illegal weapons made in Munger from the five persons arrested in connection with Pune blasts. They had allegedly told the police that they had bought the weapons from Munger.

On terrorists going for country-made weapons, an official had claimed, "A country-made pistol manufactured in Munger was as good as a sophisticated one."
