Days after protests by war veterans, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that his government was committed to One Rank One Pension.
“On OROP- the Govt is committed to OROP & there's no doubt about it," Modi tweeted.
On Friday, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said that One Rank One Pension "was on its way" but he cannot promise a date for its implementation.
All soldiers who retired before 2006 currently receive less pension than their counterparts and even their juniors. There has been a demand from ex-servicemen to implement the scheme as soon as possible as promised by the Narendra Modi government. An announcement on the programme was expected on the completion of the National Democratic Government’s first year in office.
Parrikar had said at a Pune function to honour war heroes on Thursday that his ministry has completed all formalities and OROP will be implemented. He also requested that the issue not be "politicised."
The event was boycotted by two war veterans who said that they were disillusioned by the non-implementation of OROP.
