Death toll reaches three in JK avalanche

The death toll in the avalanche that struck a village of Gurez valley near the Line of Control has gone up to three, according to a police spokesman.

The avalanche hit Badwan village on Tuesday evening burying alive five labourers of the Hindustan Construction Company.

"A rescue operation was immediately launched by the police and the Army. Two labourers were safely rescued from the avalanche debris," police said.

"During rescue operation two more bodies of Shabir Ahmad Malik and Jaffar Ahmad Lone were recovered. The rescue operation has concluded," a police spokesman said.

Last month, 18 army soldiers were killed in the same Valley when an avalanche struck the workshop of the army's brigade headquarters.

A high danger avalanche warning for the Drass area of Kargil district was issued by the the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment on Wednesday.
