DD news channel from November 3, 24 hour radio channel in April

The Prasar Bharati on Friday announced the launch of a 24-hour news channel on Doordarshan from November 3 as also a round-the-clock news service on the All India Radio from April 2, 2004.

Prasar Bharati CEO K S Sarma told reporters that the proposed DD news channel will focus on in-house production.

Sarma said the proposed channel, which will replace DD Metro, will reach approximately 43 per cent of the population and its footprint will be available in more than 78 countries.

Sarma said Prasar Bharati has learnt its lessons after the 'little bit of failure' of its last news channel. This time, he said, they have planned current affairs programmes with experienced anchors like Deepak Chaurasia, Nalini Singh, Rajat Sharma as also a chat show by Rajiv Mehrotra.

He said there will a total of 43 daily news bulletins -- 23 in Hindi and 17 in English -- besides four bulletins on world news and Asian news.

On the proposed 24-hour news channel on AIR, he said that the channel will be available on the shortwave and
will cover the entire country.
