The Central Vigilance Commission has recommended prosecution of 19 government officials, including six of Union Home Ministry, and advised penalty in 131 cases involving officers of public sector banks and railways for various offences.
The Commission disposed of 388 cases of various illegality and corruption referred to it in November 2007 and recovered to the tune of Rs 1.96 crore after conducting technical examination of some government Ministries and Department.
Apart from six MHA officials, prosecution was launched against four officials of Railways, four officials from United India Insurance Company Ltd and one official each from Central Board of Excise and Customs, Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Company Affairs and Municipal Corporation of Delhi, a CVC statement said.
The authorities, following CVC recommendation, also issued sanctions for prosecution of eight officials which include three from Central Board of Excise and Customs, two from UCO Bank, two from Ministry of Personnel and one from MCD.
Of the 131 officials against whom penalty proceedings were initiated, 23 were from MCD, 19 from public sector banks, 17 from Railways, 11 from Department of Telecommunications, nine from Central Board of Excise & Customs, seven from DDA, six from Northern Coalfields Ltd, five from Gail India Ltd officials besides others.
The CVC advised imposition of major penalty against 39 officers, including 14 from DDA, six from Railway, five from public sector banks and four BSNL officials.
The CBI filed charge-sheets in 69 cases after receipt of sanction of prosecution. The agency also received sanction for prosecution in 42 cases from various departments, the CVC said adding this matter is being closely monitored by the Commission to secure sanction from the organizations concerned in a reasonable period of time as directed by the Supreme Court. However, sanctions for prosecution are still delayed.
The Commission said it has been deeply concerned over continuing delays in filling the posts of CVOs in several key organisations like Rites, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, State Bank of Indore and Shipping Corporation of India Ltd.
