CT scans put people at risk of cancer: Report

Radiations from expensive body scans like Computed Tomography scan are putting people's health at risk by increasing the chances of cancer, experts have warned.

A report by the British Medical Association says that the risks of massive doses of radiation while carrying out the scans do not outweigh the risks for people who are not displaying symptoms.

It is thought that one fatal cancer would be caused for every 2,000 people having twice-yearly CT scans.

The scans can also cause false alarms which may lead to patients undergoing painful and invasive tests or operations for abnormalities that may never have progressed into cancer.

The British Medical Association has said that private scans are a waste of money in the majority of cases and can be dangerous and is likely to ban such scanning.

However, the experts say that Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans do not cause such risks as they do not expose the body to radiation, the Daily Telegraph reported.

MRI uses magnets to build a picture of the inside of the body instead of x-rays.
