Still haunted by the memories of the tragic end met by their young daughters, parents of Soumya Viswanathan and Jigisha Ghosh now want the perpetrators to suffer for the crime they have committed.

While IT executive Ghosh's parents want the murderers to be hanged, TV news producer Soumya's parents say they do not want the criminals to go to the gallows and have an easy redemption but should suffer for life and favoured rigorous life imprisonment for them.

"Death penalty is of no use. The culprits should suffer and strict punishment should be given to them. I want 10-12 years of rigorous imprisonment for them," M K Vishwanathan, Soumya's father, told PTI.

Jigisha's mother Savitri, who is yet to recover from the tragedy of her daughter's killing, said she wants the culprits to be hanged. Savitri remembers her daughter as a person who never stood second in life.

"She was ambitious and wanted to do PhD. She was also planning to pursue a course in foreign trade," she said.

A relieved Vishwanathan said he was happy to hear that four persons were arrested in connection with the murder of Soumya. Both Soumya and Jigisha were killed by a gang of robbers out of which four have been arrested and one is still absconding.

"I was hopeful that culprits will be caught one day. But life had been miserable for us, especially for her mother. Each day we thought that Soumya might return also. But in the meantime I didn't want police to close the case," Viswanathan said.

He said Soumya liked making friends. "There were around 700-900 names in her phone book," he said adding "I had a feeling that Soumya's case will be solved and after Jigisha's death the feeling came that the case will reach its logical conclusion."

On Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's comment that Soumya was "adventurous" to travel alone in night, he said, "She did not mean it. Media exaggerated the matter. She even apologised."

Jigisha's father Jaganath Ghosh remembered his only child as a "bold" person who was never scared by the criminals.

"She wanted to come home that day as to watch the cricket match between India and New Zealand," he said. Regarding the money taken out from her bank accounts by the robbers, her father said, "There was around 8.5 lakh in my daughter's bank account". Ghosh said security of senior citizens should also be considered. "Such incidents could happen to them also," he added.
