Countrywide H1N1 toll rises to 102

As the country battled the H1N1 virus, the pandemic took the lives of two men and a woman in Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, raising the nationwide toll to 102 even as 128 more tested positive for the virus in various states.

42-year-old Vilas Padale and 26-year-old Anil Nikam died due to flu infection at separate private hospitals in Pune last night, officials said on Monday.

They said as many as 15 patients, currently undergoing treatment for the viral disease, were in critical condition in various hospitals in worst-hit Pune, where 31 people have succumbed to the disease.

35-year-old Rubina, a resident of Mussoorie, who was suffering from cold, cough and fever for the last five days, died in Doon Hospital on Sunday night, nodal officer for swine flu in Uttarakhand Pankaj Jain said.

Her throat swab samples have been sent for test, he said. With the three casualties, the countrywide toll has risen to 102.

Maharashtra now accounts for 53 fatalities including 10 in Mumbai, eight in Nashik, two in Aurangabad and one each in Dhule and Latur.

As many as 26 flu deaths have taken place in Karnataka, eight in Gujarat, three each in Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Delhi and two in Uttarakhand and one each in Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan and Haryana.

Meanwhile, H1N1 cases continued to swell across the country with 128 more testing positive for the infection, taking the total number of flu cases till Sunday to 3,881, the Health Ministry said in Delhi.
