Cops prepare sketches of 26/11 lawyer's killers

February 12, 2010 19:49 IST

The police have prepared sketches of the two gunmen who shot dead criminal lawyer Shahid Azmi at his office on Thursday.

Two gunmen reportedly barged into the office of Azmi in suburban Mumbai and shot him dead, while another gunman waited outside to keep a watch. All the three escaped after committing the crime.

"We have prepared sketches of the two gunmen who had shot at Azmi, based on the description given by the peon in Azmi's office. The sketch of one person is very clear and our investigations are on the right track," said Joint Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria.

Maria added that the police were not aware whether Azmi, 32, had received any threats to his life. Azmi, who defended 26/11 accused Faheem Ansari, had received threats from members of the Ravi Pujari gang some years ago.

However, after 2007, the lawyer had not yet informed the police about threats to his life. An officer, on condition of anonymity, said the murder could have been done at the behest of the underworld.
