A police constable has been suspended and an inquiry ordered into the firing in Maisuma locality of Srinagar that left five persons injured on Monday.

"An inquiry has been initiated to know the facts which led to this incident and one police constable has been suspended," the police said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police sources alleged that constable Feroz Ahmad, who was a personal security officer of the station house officer of Maisuma police station, had opened fire without the orders of the SHO on Monday.

According to the police, some protestors violated the restrictions on the movement of people in Maisuma chowk and indulged in pelting stones at security forces, in which two constables were injured. Following this, security forces opened fire, they said.
