Congress only loves 'golmaal song': BJP hits back

June 07, 2011 20:01 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday rejected the Congress's demand for Sushma Swaraj's resignation as the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha for dancing at Rajghat and said the party is proud of her.

"The BJP would like to state categorically that the appointment (of the Leader of the Opposition) is made by the party leadership and the MPs and not by Congress president Sonia Gandhi," said BJP national spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

"It is not unusual that BJP leaders sing patriotic songs when joining a movement against corruption," he said, adding that the party is proud of Swaraj.

The Congress has demanded Swaraj's resignation for insulting Mahatma Gandhi by her dance.

In a sarcastic remark on the Congress, Rudy said, "The Congress only loves one song Golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai".

On Monday, while taking potshots at the BJP's 24-hour-long agitation at the Mahatma Gandhi's samadhi, Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi had said, "What kind of fast is this when the Leader of the Opposition is dancing along with her friends at Gandhi's Samadhi?"

Swaraj, in her reaction, later tweeted, "This was around 2 in the morning. I stepped in for a brief moment to boost the morale of our party workers (sic)."

She said it was a tradition of the BJP to sing patriotic songs during all protests.
