Cong upbeat about Rahul's road show in Assam villages

February 19, 2014 18:19 IST

Congress supporters in Assam are upbeat about their party vice president Rahul Gandhi’s upcoming road show in the villages along with a massive rally in the state during his visit on February 25 and 26.

“Modi spent hardly three hours in Assam, but Rahul Gandhi will spend 30 hours amid the people here. That is the difference between Modi and Rahul Gandhi as well as the Congress and the BJP,” Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Wednesday.

Rahul is scheduled to travel along a 65 kilometre long road through villages from Nagaon to Kaliabhomora Bridge on the Brahmaputra river through Ambagan on February 26. He will meet villagers during the road show to know about their concerns and life.

Gogoi added, “Congress is genuinely concerned about the people of Assam and their problems; and hence Rahul Gandhi will be meeting people from various walks of life during his visit to the state.”

“We are not much focused on the public rally to be addressed by Rahul Gandhi in Guwahati on February 25 as turnout in such rallies hardly matter in elections. Rahul Gandhi wants to meet the people of Assam personally to know about their problems,” Gogoi said.

Besides the road show, Rahul Gandhi will also meet students of Don Bosco University in Guwahati, and also talk to the intellectuals of the state in a separate function.

He will address a massive rally in the afternoon of February 25 in Guwahati and talk to members of the autonomous district  council at Diphu in Karbi Anglong hill district. He will also hold a meeting with women in Jorhat in the afternoon of February 26.

Gogoi on Wednesday also informed that Right to Food Security Act could not be implemented in Assam before Lok Sabha polls as it would create chaos given that there were no fair price shops in tea garden areas of Assam while larger section of the beneficiaries under the act would be from the tea garden areas.

Gogoi also said that his government would put into force the Lokayukta Act, which was passed by the Parliament, in the state after ‘certain amendments’ under consideration of experts.
