Jamaat-ud-Dawah activists have prevented the holding of a promotion event organised by a leading multinational company for its shaving razors by ransacking the venue in the Pakistani port city of Karachi.

Scores of angry members of the JuD gathered outside the Expo Centre in Karachi, where the firm had organised the event on Tuesday, and ransacked the venue.

They prevented the MNC from going ahead with the event which was aimed at setting a world record for most people shaving at the same time.

Just as the event was about to get underway, JuD activists forcibly entered the Expo Centre and disrupted the proceedings.

They then staged a protest outside the Expo Centre and shouted slogans against the company. The gathering was also addressed by JuD leaders. The JuD activists, who described the event as "shameful" and "anti Islami", carried placards and banners with slogans like: "Rasulallah! We are ready to die to protect your Sunnah".

They also called on people to boycott the MNC and its products. The activists also claimed the company had "offended the sentiments of Muslims" by organising the event.

The Karachi police chief Waseem Ahmed sought to play down the event, saying the protest had not created a "security situation at all".

He claimed the MNC cancelled the event due to a low turnout.

The JuD, which is led by Lashker-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, has a sizeable presence in Karachi. Several of the JuD's publications are published from the port city.

In recent weeks, Saeed has stepped up his tirade against India during public appearances and media interviews.
