G Shirish Bharadwaj, the son-in-law of actor turned politician Chiranjeevi, was on Friday remanded to two-day police custody by a local court in connection with a dowry harassment case.

The Central Crime Station in Hyderabad had sought seven-day police custody for Bharadwaj, but the additional chief metropolitan magistrate's court did not accede to the request.

Bharadwaj, who had been absconding since March, surrendered before the court on Wednesday.

Chiranjeevi's daughter K Srija has filed a complaint against Shirish and his mother Suryamangala alleging harassment for dowry.

Seeking bail for his client, Bharadwaj's lawyer on Friday said he had respect for the law and hence he had surrendered. The prosecution said that Bharadwaj may flee again if released. It also produced a copy of the complaint filed by Srija alleging that Shirish and his mother, who is out on bail, were threatening her over the phone, asking her to withdraw the complaint.

The hearing on the bail plea would continue on August 10.

Srija, the youngest daughter of Chiranjeevi, married Shirish in 2007 against the wishes of her family. The couple has a daughter. But subsequently, the marriage soured, with Srija alleging harassment for additional dowry.
