With tension mounting in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra over the Babili Dam dispute, the Maharashtra government has decided to shift Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu to the Aurangabad jail.
On Monday, Naidu and other TDP leaders refused to accept bail after a fresh hearing was conducted upon completion of their two-day judicial remand period. Following this, the Nanded magistrate extended their judicial remand till July 26.
Earlier, locals in Maharashtra's Dharmabad city alleged that they were baton-charged
The TDP had called for a shutdown across Andhra Pradesh to protest the arrest.
Naidu and 75 other politicians were taken into preventive custody on Friday last by the Maharashtra Police for violating prohibitory orders by trying to visit the Babili Dam in that state to find out whether it was grabbing more than its share of water from river Godavari.
Naidu claimed he was there only to inspect the contentious Babili barrage project and to fight for Andhra Pradesh's fair share of water.
