Central Bureau of Investigation Director P C Sharma was elected vice-president of the Interpol on Thurdsay to become only the second Indian to be elected to the prestigious post in 30 years.

Sharma defeated Salim Maliki of Iran in the election held at the General Assembly of Interpol at Benidorm in Spain, a CBI spokesman said.

As vice-president representing the Asian region, the CBI director will have a three-year term with the Interpol.

Sharma, one of the seniormost serving police officers in the country, has experience in policing spread across criminal investigation, law enforcement, training, policy formulation and management.

He has been decorated with President's Police Medal and Indian Police Medal.

The executive committee of the Interpol meets three times a year before the general assembly.

The executive committee has 13 members comprising the president of the organisation, three vice-presidents and nine delegates.
