Cannes: Palme d'Or for The Child

The Child, a Belgian drama about a young petty thief who sells his newborn son, won the top Palme d'Or prize for best film on Saturday at the 58th Cannes film festival.

The film, directed by Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, staved off challenge from 20 other films.

Hollywood star Tommy Lee Jones won the best actor prize for his performance in the modern-day Western, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

Israel's Hanna Laslo won the best actress prize for her performance in Free Zone, a drama envisioning a Middle East freed of its borders.

Laslo dedicated the prize to her mother, a Holocaust survivor.
