Canada has lauded the Indian diaspora here for their valuable role in boosting its economy, while a Municipality in suburban Toronto has declared August 15 as 'India Day' to celebrate New Delhi's contributions to the world.
In Canada, Indians have been playing an important role in economic, social and cultural sphere, Prime Minister Paul Martin said in a message yesterday to the South Asians in Ontario, an organisation dedicated to promote Indian values, on the occasion of the Independence Day. He said the Indian diaspora in Canada has been playing an important role in boosting the country's economy.
Meanwhile, for the first time in the history of Canada, the Municipality of Markham, a city near Toronto, passed a unanimous resolution declaring August 15 as "India Day."
We will celebrate "India Day" every year to remember the contributions made by India to the world at large," City Mayor Don Coussens said yesterday.
