Building collapses in Mumbai; 5 killed, 26 injured

Five persons were killed and 26 injured when the portion of a multi-storeyed building collapsed in south Mumbai on Thursday, fire brigade officials said. The incident occurred on Thursday morning when a portion of the three-storeyed 'Jamnadas' building in Bhendi Bazaar came down crashing, they said.

"The building collapsed after a cylinder blast in a scrap shop in the ground floor of the building," Chief Fire Officer Uday Tatkare said.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Sabhir Mansuri (25), Mohammed Pappu Mahajan Qureshi (25), Wali Ulla Mohammed Shiekh Mansuri (28), Mohammed Irfan Mira Baksh (28) and Ishaan Ulla Jaana Ulli (22), the officials said, adding that the injured are undergoing medical treatment at J J Hospital.

One Ramdas Rathod (55) is in critical condition, having suffered 60 per cent burn injuries.

Congress Member of Parliament Milind Deora visited the place and announced a compensation of Rs one lakh to the family of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to the critically injured, and Rs 25,000 to those with minor injuries.
