A day after a dismissed senior police inspector, accused of raping a minor, was found dead near railway tracks in Srirampur, a senior police official said it was a case of suicide as there were witnesses who saw the disgraced 'encounter specialist' killing himself.

"Going by the accounts of three eyewitnesses, it is clear that it was a case of suicide. Arun Borude pushed himself between railway engine and the first bogie of the Nanded-Daund train," Additional SP (Srirampur) Sunil Kadasane told PTI.

According to eyewitnesses, Borude was lying on the tracks intending to commit suicide.

"As the train was coming towards him, he stood up and walked a little away from the tracks. May be, he decided not to commit suicide. But as the train was passing through the place where he was lying, Borude appeared to have had a second thought and then pushed himself between the engine and the first bogie after which he sustained severe injuries. Since the train had just left Srirampur railway station, it was not at a high speed," Kadasane said.

The eyewitnesses also informed the police that Borude was talking over phone and was holding another phone in his hand before committing suicide, he said.

"When we telephoned the number the ex-cop had dialed before the suicide, it was found that the receiver was his brother. When we asked his brother what Borude had spoken to him in his last call, he did not co-operate and brushed off our questions," Kadasane added.

The 1983 batch officer of Maharashtra Police, Borude, 52, was dismissed after his name cropped up in the rape case of a 15-year-old girl in suburban Powai. He was absconding following registration of an FIR against him on November 1.
