The Chhattisgarh police demanded the return of Rs 10,000 it provided to the family of a martyred special police officer for his last rites on Wednesday.

Pandey was murdered by Naxals during an attack in 2011. Since his family’s finances were limited they could not even afford to pay for his last rites.

Reacting to the incident, former army chief and Minister of State for External Affairs General VK Singh (retired) said it could be a ‘clerical mistake’. When asked for a clarification, he snapped, “What can I do? You run a campaign and rectify it.”

Last week too, Singh was caught in a controversy over his remarks comparing the Yemen evacuation operation with his visit to the Pakistani mission recently and later making snide remarks against a TV channel.
