November 22, 2003 19:39 IST

The Mother Of All Bombs was tested at the Florida range, the US Air Force said on Saturday.

At 9,545 kg, it is the largest conventional bomb in the US arsenal.

The bomb is similar to the 6,800 kg Daisy Cutter, which was used in Vietnam, the 1991 Gulf war and Afghanistan.

The air force said an MC-130E Combat Talon I aircraft dropped the bomb over the Eglin Air Force base range on Friday.

Designated GBU-43/B, the bomb is officially called the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB).

Ten meters long, 102 centimeters wide and with 8,500 kg of high explosives, it was developed in nine weeks.
