Five persons, including four children, were drowned and eight others went missing after a boat capsized on Monday in the Sohali river in Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh.
Those missing are also feared drowned, sources said. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when a boat carrying 24 people capsized.
While 11 people swam to safety, the bodies of five were recovered from the river and eight were still missing, superintendent of police, Lakhimpur, Kheri Ram Bharose told PTI over phone. Senior officials have reached the spot to supervise rescue operation.
