July 13, 2006 20:32 IST

Noted defence lawyer Majid Memon who has defended the accused in Ghatkopar blast case, on Thursday said he was ready to be the prosecutor in the Mumbai train blasts case if the Maharashtra government appoints him.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh along with film maker Mahesh Bhatt, Memon said: "Not everybody arrested in terror related cases is guilty."

"Investigators have to go ahead with caution and have honest intentions of bringing out the truth," he said.

Asked to explain his stance, while he appears in terror-related cases to defend the accused, Memon said: "I am being asked the question because I am a Muslim. Defence lawyers like Ram Jethmalani, Adhik Shirodkar are never asked in such a manner."

"If an innocent is framed as guilty, he may really become a terrorist," he said.
