An attempt was made on the life of newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti allegedly by three persons but she managed to escape unhurt, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday night as she was returning from a function at Avas Vikas colony, police added. In her complaint, Niranjan Jyoti has said that while she was returning from the ceremony, one Bhanu Patel along with his three aides attacked her and opened fire.

The MP said that her gunman Rahul Tiwari sustained serious injuries in the scuffle with the attackers. While the other attackers were chased away by locals, Bhanu Patel has been arrested by police.

Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Singh said that the attack was executed in a pre-planned manner over an old rivalry. He added that raids were being conducted to nab the other attackers.
