January 30, 2003 11:14 IST

Tension prevailed in Gaya on Thursday following desecration of religious idols by unidentified criminals.

District Magistrate Brajesh Mehrotra said that some unidentified criminals had damaged the idols of Parvati and Shivalinga on Wednesday night.

As the news of the incident spread, agitated people gathered at several points.

The situation was tense but under control, Mehrotra said, adding the administration had sought reinforcements, including the anti-riot Vajra vehicle from the state government, to deal with any eventuality.

On December 28 some idols placed at the Ramshila Hills were damaged. Again on January 9, two places of worship were damaged in the town, causing tension.
