Unidentified gunmen shot dead three people on Wednesday in Chapra town in Bihar outside Rashtriya Janata Dal member of Parliament Umashanar Singh's house, police officials said.

Around 10 to 12 gunmen drove up in a jeep to the house at Rajendra Sarovar, which was newly purchased by the MP, and opened fire killing the three who were present there, Superintendent of police A K Satyayarthi told mediapersons.

Singh was not present at that time as he had gone to attend a function. He said the attack was a conspiracy hatched by his political opponents. "Thank god I am safe. I believe I may have been the target," he said.

Police said the Devendra Singh, a former mukhiya, besides Mani Bhushan Singh and Dinesh Rai were supporters of Singh.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed Director General of police Neelmani to inquire and submit a report. Singh said he had already requested Union Home Minister P  Chidambaram and Kumar for security and would approach them again.
