Bihar IPS officer accused of extortion, threat

The Bihar government has filed a First Information Report against Alok Kumar, a senior Indian Police Service officer, who is the deputy inspector general of Saran in Bihar, for allegedly demanding Rs 10 crore from a liquor mafia and threatening him with dire consequences, a police official on Sunday said.

"After the FIR was filed, the police headquarters would send a recommendation of his suspension to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday," a police official said.

A senior police official said that Kumar may be arrested in a day or two as charges against him was found true in an investigation conducted by the police headquarters.

"This is the first time that the state government has begun a process to take action against a DIG rank officer for corruption," a police official said.

Inspector General Anupama Nilekar Chandra told mediapersons that the police is investigating into the allegations against Kumar.

Police have also arrested three people associated with the DIG in this connection."The police have recovered Rs 5 lakh from the house of three arrested men during a raid in the case," Anupama said.

The Bihar government has begun the process to seize the properties of liquor mafia dons following the deaths of more than 60 people, mostly the poor, from illicit liquor in various regions across the state in last two months.

Interestingly, Kumar was the 'blue-eyed boy' of the chief minister until a few months ago as he hails from the Nalanda district. He is essentially a Jammu and Kashmir cadre 1997 batch IPS officer. 

Earlier, Kumar was made the Patna senior superintendent of police.

Last year, the Bihar government had suspended another IPS officer Ansuiya Rana Singh Sahu for corruption.The suspension followed a recommendation from the police headquarters.

Sahu, a 2006 batch IPS officer, was accused of corruption when she was the superintendent of Sheikhpura district between March 24 and September 12 last year, an official of the home department said.
