September 12, 2012 16:20 IST

Twelve passengers were injured on Wednesday as a coach of 13226 UP Danapur-Jainagar Inter-City Express derailed near Bachhwara railway station in Bihar's Begusarai district, official sources said.

The SLR coach of the Inter-City Express derailed due to mechanical problems and rammed into an electric post, the sources said.

The driver applied brakes all of a sudden to bring the train to a grinding halt, they said, adding 12 passengers sustained injuries even as several passengers jumped off the coach.

In the process, 12 of them, including the guard, sustained injuries, they said. The Bachhwara Station Manager Sudhir Rai and RPF's nearby outpost in-charge Ramji Yadav rushed to the spot and took the injured passengers to a hospital for treatment, the sources said.

Train service has been disrupted on the up line due to derailment, they said, adding efforts were on to remove the ill-fated coach from the track to normalise service.
