Bihar: Govt begins cleaning ghats ahead of Chhath Puja

November 15, 2012 14:52 IST

Sensing anger and unhappiness over the pathetic condition of the 'ghats' (banks) along sacred Ganga river ahead of Chhath Puja -- the most popular Hindu festival in Bihar, the state government has began a cleanliness drive and beautification of all ghats in Patna and outside.

A day after hundreds of local residents in Patna's Digha and Kurji protested against poor shape of ghats, the Patna Municipal Corporation and the district administration have started a cleanliness drive and beautification of all 70 ghats
spread over different locations here.

Bihar Urban Development Minister Prem Kumar said that in view of urgency to clean and beautify ghats, the intensive drive had already begun. "The department has given the charge of cleaning the ghats before Chhath festival to private contractors," he said.

"After all, Chhath is a festival known for its hygiene and purity, there is no place for garbage and filth near the ghats," he added.

A PMC official said that workers have been engaged to lift heaps of garbage and filth around the ghats and roads leading to these ghats.

"We will be able to complete the cleanliness and beautification work by Friday evening," the official said.

All ghats will be ready Saturday for millions of devotees to offer their prayers and worship to the Sun God on November 19 and 20.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi ordered to construct bamboo bridges after visiting some ghats, where Ganga river has moved away from its bank, and erect makeshift ponds at dangerous ghats to ensure safety of devotees.
