Banaras Hindu University on Saturday suspended 14 students for their alleged role in inciting violence on the campus two days ago.

The university administration also said that a probe by a retired High Court judge will also be conducted into the widespread violence on the campus.

Scores of students and others were injured on the campus here on Thursday when some students demanding restoration of students union instead of election to the students' council turned violent and clashed with the police.

Meanwhile, a faculty member was also suspended and another was being with served with a show-cause notice for "financial irregularity" in the University.

BHU acting Vice Chancellor, Rajeev Sangal, today told media persons that a suspension order to 14 students and one faculty member, along with show-cause notice to another faculty member will be handed over within two working days.

The VC said the suspension of one faculty member here has been done for his alleged role in financial irregularity.

Sangal, however, did not reveal the names of suspended students and the faculty member.

He said that names will be revealed after handing over the suspension order and the show-cause notice.

Sangal said,"A one man inquiry committee of a retired high court judge will conduct the investigation of the two-day violent incidents in BHU campus."

"A retired judge, Shailendra Saxena, in a telephonic conversation has agreed to conduct the probe and we expect this investigation to be completed in one month," the VC said.

Congress made a strong plea to President Pranab Mukherjee to intervene in the affairs of BHU to ensure immediate students union elections.

The demand came a day after three dozen students were arrested by Uttar Pradesh police, and at least five hostels of the BHU had to be vacated after violence broke out in the sprawling campus on Thursday over the demand to hold students' union elections.
