The indefinite strike by Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking employees demanding wage revision entered its second day on Saturday.

Almost the entire 3,400-strong fleet of BEST buses remained off the roads, causing inconvenience to lakhs of commuters in the city.

The talks with the authorities on the demands of employees did not yield any result on Friday night, BEST Kamgar Karmachari Sanghatana Kruti Samiti sources said.

However, 500 BEST buses and 165 state transport corporation buses were likely to operated in the city on Sunday, BEST sources said.

A majority of BEST's 44,000 employees, affiliated to various unions, had launched the stir from March 11.

The road transport service ferries nearly 45 lakh passengers a day.

Meanwhile, the railways have increased the number of trains on the central and western suburban routes, sources said.

Six extra trains on the harbour line and five on the main line have been pressed into service.
