Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the multi-crore fake stamp paper case was convicted in the Madiwala (Bengaluru) case. This case registered under the Madiwala police station was considered to be the motherlode since it was through the investigation into this case that the Special Investigating Team managed to bust a nationwide fake stamp paper network.
Special Sessions judge Chandrashekhar Patil's 923-page order convicted Telgi and 17 others. Two other high profile accused in the case, Jayasimha and Nanjappa, jail superintendents who were charged for taking favours from Telgi were however acquitted by the court. In all there were 36 accused in this case of which 18 were convicted.
This case was registered when Telgi had already been arrested. Despite being under arrest, he managed to get a cell phone into jail. All these calls were tapped and helped the investigators crack down on his India wide network.
The sessions court after delivering the verdict today has adjourned hearing for tomorrow. The court while calling for the records said that it would decide on the pronouncement of sentence tomorrow. The court examined 500 documents and 146 witnesses in this case which was heard for nearly 6 years
