Mechanic arrested in Bandra murder case

September 04, 2007 19:00 IST

A mechanic was arrested in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old man, who was stabbed to death while sitting with his girlfriend at a popular seafront at Bandra in Mumbai.

"Acting on specific information, we arrested Jitendra Verma, a suspect in the case, on Monday night," Deputy Commissioner of Police V K Choubey said.

Rohit Jadhav was killed by three men while they were spending time on rocks off the Carter Road promenade on Sunday evening. Choubey said the motive behind the incident was pure robbery and not Jadhav's refusal to part with any money as a contribution towards "dahihandi" festivities as was being said earlier.

Verma, 25, worked as a mechanic in the area and stayed at some other place, he said. Police are looking for Verma's two accomplices and Choubey said they were  confident of nabbing them soon.

A sketch of the three accused was prepared on descriptions given by the girl.

"The couple were sitting in a secluded spot which did not have any light. So we do not have the exact sketch," a police officer said. Jadhav and his girlfriend are residents of the same locality in Khar. Verma was produced in a local court, which remanded him in police custody till September 14.
