In a new twist to the Banda minor rape case, the accused Bahujan Samaj Party member of Legislative Assembly Pushottam Narain Dwivedi has claimed that he is impotent.

"I am being implicated falsely. The charge of rape against me is baseless. I have not raped the girl as I am impotent," Dwivedi told mediapersons in Banda, about 180 km from Lucknow on Tuesday evening.

"I am ready to be examined by any medical expert across the country to confirm what I am saying," he added.

The seventeen-year-old victim, belonging to the Dalit community, has accused Dwivedi and his supports of not only raping her but also using his political clout to falsely implicate the girl in a case of theft. In a written statement before a local court in Banda, she on Tuesday said that the MLA had raped her twice.

A local court in Banda saw sufficient reason for a prima facie case against Dwivedi. Taking cognisance of a hand-written statement given by the victim, Banda Civil Judge Pervez Akhtar asked the superintendent of police to investigate the case and submit a report by January 14.
