Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Wednesday took everyone by surprise when he drove a tractor on a plot of agricultural land he had purchased a few months ago in Muzaffarnagar village near Kakori, about 30 km from Lucknow.
Accompanied by his wife Jaya and a few other people, the megastar drove down to the village in the afternoon. He hopped on to an awaiting tractor, which he rode for a bout 20 minutes over the 2.4 hectare plot of land owned jointly by him and his wife.
In addition, Bachchan had purchased another adjoining plot of about the same size in the name of his son Abhishek.
The two plots were purchased by the Bachchans in the month of June last for a price of about Rs 3 crore.
The land purchase followed a major controversy involving an alleged fraudulent transfer of a government-owned agricultural land in a Barabanki village, about 40 km from Lucknow, in the name of the mega star during the Mulayam Singh Yadav regime.
It was with great difficulty that Bachchan could wriggle out of the mess. His desperation to become owner of agricultural land was prompted by his need to be declared a 'farmer' without which it was not possible for him to regularize a huge agricultural property purchased by him in Pune.
Maharashtra's laws do not permit transfer of agricultural land to any non-farmer.
