Harivanshrai Bachchan's ashes
immersed at Sangam

Renowned poet litterateur Harivanshrai Bachchan's ashes were on Friday immersed at the Sangam by his elder son, film star Amitabh Bachchan, amid tight security.

Amitabh's wife Jaya Bachchan, his brother Ajitabh, son Abhishek and Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Amar Singh were also present during the solemn ceremony that lasted over an hour.

Thousands of people lined the banks where theĀ Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet to pay tribute to poet, who died in Mumbai in January 18.

Earlier, the urn containing the ashes of Dr Bachchan was brought to Allahabad on a special aircraft by family members and friends.

The urn, kept in an open DCM Toyota, was driven through a circuitous route through the city to enable people and admirers pay their last respects to the departed soul.

The urn was also kept for sometime at the Muthiganj and Clive road residences of the litterateur and the Allahabad University where the poet had taught for several years.
