Noted writer and human rights activist Mahasweta Devi has resigned as the chairperson of the Bangla Academy.
The Magsaysay Award-winner decided to step down after expressing her disagreement with the government about some of the recipients of the state's prestigious literature awards.
Mahasweta Devi had been a vociferous supporter of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when the Trinamool Congress stormed to power last year.
But since then, she has criticised the CM and her government over a variety of issues.
