Australia: Indian origin doctor sentenced for illegal abortions

A Sydney-based doctor of Indian origin, accused of performing an illegal abortion, was on Tuesday put on a two-year good behaviour bond by a state court.

Suman Sood, 57, was sentenced by the Supreme Court of the state of New South Wales after she was found guilty of two counts of unlawfully giving abortion drugs to a woman in May 2002.

Sood, who recently gave up her medical profession, became the first person in 25 years to be convicted for an unlawful abortion in the state of New South Wales, The Australian daily reported.
