Six persons were killed and 49 injured and a gas pipeline of Assam Gas Company Limited was extensively damaged in separate incidents of violence as ultras of the United Liberation Front of Asom went on a killing spree in Upper Assam on Sunday.

According to police, two persons died in the impact of an ULFA-triggered blast in front of a restaurant near a cinema hall at Doom Dooma town in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam at around 6 pm on Sunday.

One of the killed was identified as Ganga Ram. Twenty-two other persons were injured in the explosion.

Three persons were killed and as many as 27 others injured in another powerful bomb explosion at Devipukhuri area in Tinsukia town of Upper Assam at around 5.50 pm. The bomb was suspected to be planted in a bicycle stand in the market areas.

All the three persons died at the Assam Medical College Hospital in neighbouring Dibrugarh town, where they were rushed for specialised treatment, the police said.

An Assam Gas Company Limited pipeline suffered extensive damage and caught fire following an explosion detonated by suspected ULFA militants at Tiwarigola near Oil India Limited's pumping station at Vekulajan under Tengakhat police station of Dibrugarh district at around 6-45 pm.

In a separate incident earlier in the day, a surrendered ULFA member, identified as one Dipankar Baruah alias Bhaikon, was shot dead by a group of three ULFA militants at Nagabat under Borhola police station of Jorhat district of eastern Assam at around 11 am.

Police suspected that the surrendered militant was killed by his former comrades taking him to be an informer of security forces. The ULFA assailant came on bicycles. The incident occurred near Assam-Nagaland interstate boundary.
