June 13, 2007 12:46 IST

A havildar of B116 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force posted in Guwahati committed suicide on Tuesday evening with his service weapon. In another incident, a missing Indian Army surgeon, Major Anurag Sharma, posted in Dibrugarh in Assam is also suspected to have committed suicide.

Havildar Baljit Singh, who hails from Punjab and was posted at the CRPF camp at Fatasil Ambari area in Guwahati, committed suicide with his INSAS service rifle while he was discharging his duty on Tuesday evening.

It happened to be third suicides by CRPF men from the B116 battalion posted in Guwahati during the last 18 months. Three months back, another CRPF jawan posted at a railway yard in the city committed suicide. Another CRPF jawan posted in Assam's capital complex in Guwahati committed suicide about 18 months back

Meanwhile, the police recovered the abandoned car of Major Anurag Sharma who was posted at the 162 military hospital at Dinjan in Upper Assam and missing since Monday evening, near Oakland Tea Estate at Rohmaria on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh on Tuesday afternoon.

Chances of the Army major committing suicide has not been ruled out by the Dibrugarh police given that a depressing note was recovered from his abandoned vehicle. He might have taken a plunge into the mighty rain-fed river. Major (Doctor) Nandini Sharma, the wife of the Army official, is away as part of an Indian Army mission in Sudan.
