Assam: Soldier killed, 5 hurt in ULFA blast

At least one Army jawan was killed and five others -- including an Army captain -- injured when militants of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom detonated an improvised explosive device under two Army vehicles at Asomiyagaon village of Dibrugarh district on Wednesday afternoon.

A civilian was also injured in the blast that damaged an Army jeep and partially damaged another vehicle.

The Army used a helicopter to lift the body of its slain jawan as well as evacuate the injured to its nearest base hospital.

The death toll may go up as the condition of the injured Army captain was stated to be serious.

ULFA has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement sent to Tinsukia office of a local vernacular daily immediately after the incident, the militant group claimed that the 'operation was carried out by the C company of its 28 battalion' to avenge the recent killing of its senior leader Charan Majhi in Dibrugarh district.

Senior police and Army officials rushed to the spot after the blast. A massive combing operation was launched to nab the ultras involved in the explosion.
