A magisterial court on Friday remanded Ranjit Das, the man who had allegedly severed his wife's head and marched through a street in the Assam's capital city on Thursday, to judicial custody for three days.
Das, who lives in a rented house at Bikrampur, Japorigog locality in the city had chopped off the head of his wife Amaya Daimary Das, and then walked to the horror of onlookers along the street holding it in one hand and a blood-stained machete on the other until some Central Reserve Police Force jawans accosted him at the busy Ganeshguri Point and drove him to Dispur police station.
The police said Das had confessed to have killed his wife during interrogation. He would be produced before the magistrate again on Monday.
Das is a part-time autorickshaw driver in the city and owns a small grocery shop in his locality. He had failed in many other business ventures earlier and had a strained relation with his wife, according to his neighbours. The couple has two sons aged nine and six years.
Das told the police that he killed his wife because he had suspected her of having an affair with another person. He is also told the police the name of this person, which the police refused to divulge.
Amaya was a health worker under the National Rural Health Mission posted at Orang in Udalguri district in North Assam. She had come home for Dusherra, and was killed just few hours after her arrival.
