Assam: Man gets 7 years in jail for raping minor

A 35-year old man has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by a court in Darrang district in Assam after he was found guilty of rape of a four-year old girl more than five years ago.

Nurul Haque, an unemployed person from Kenduguri village under Sipajhar police station in the district was awarded the sentence by N Ahmed, assistant sessions judge cum civil judge of Darrang district on Wednesday.

The rape was committed on October 6, 2007 and the culprit was arrested under Section 376 of the IPC by the police a couple of days after the crime had been committed.

The culprit had picked up the four-year old girl of the same village from the roadside and had raped her, causing her serious physical injuries apart from mental trauma.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, failing to pay which the guilty will have to undergo a further term of six months under rigorous imprisonment.
