Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday underwent a planned diabetes management surgery at a private hospital in Delhi and was recovering well.
Jaitley, 61, was admitted to the hospital in Saket on Monday evening and on Tuesday an elective laparoscopic procedure was carried out on him. “Arun Jaitley underwent a planned elective laparoscopic procedure for diabetes management today. The procedure has been performed successfully,” a statement issued by the hospital said.
Jaitley has been a diabetic for last few years. “It was a planned surgery. He was admitted at around 6 pm on Monday. The surgery is done in an uncontrolled diabetic situation,” Dr Pradeep K Chowbey at the hospital said.
“In this procedure we staple the stomach and make a small pouch of stomach and connect it to the intestine. Thus, the food from the small pouch goes to the intestine directly. All this is done endoscopically and laparoscopically,” he said.
Chowbey said Jaitley was doing fine and will be discharged in a day or two. Jaitley had underwent a series of routine blood and cardiac investigations before the surgery.
